In order to maintain the finish on your alloy wheels it is recommended that you use soap and water based solution only when cleaning your alloy wheels. Such alloy wheel cleaners can contain acid based chemicals which, with use, will deteriorate the finish on your alloy wheels, and can invalidate your warranty on the alloy wheel.

Alloy wheelAs dust and mud can cause scratches on your alloys finish it is recommended that you keep your alloys as clean as possible. If kept clean on a regular basis then the alloys will look at their best for years to come.

How should I keep my chromed wheels/spinners in their best condition?

You simply wash as you would your cars bodywork using the same equipment, some simple instructions are below:

  • Lightly spray the tyres and rims with water.
  • Mix together the car cleaning shampoo and wax in a bucket of warm water and wash the tyres and rims down with a sponge.
  • Rinse off wheels with clean water.
  • If after this process there is still dirt and grime on the tyres then you should use a chrome only wheel cleaner. These are very gentle and will not damage the chrome on the wheels, all you have to do is scrub on with a sponge and then rinse off as before.
  • Then once the wheels and alloys are dry you should use a wax cleaner on top of them. This is to provide a protective layer so that dirt will stick to the wax rather than drying onto the chrome finish.

Alloy WheelsTo keep your wheels and alloys in their best condition it is thought best to clean them like this once every week or so. Especially if you are driving along roads that have a lot of grit or sand on them, this is because the grit and sand can become ground into the alloys and will eventually affect the finish.

Do not use car washes, the detergents used could damage the chrome finish, or the chrome finish could get scratched. Don't use any wheel dirt/brake dust cleaners than can't be used on chromed wheels, the acid content could effect the finish, we only recommend what is listed above.

What do I do if I damage a wheel & can chromed wheels be re-chromed?

If you do damage the chrome finish on the wheel it cannot be re-chromed in Europe but you can use a clear lacquer on the alloy. This would not restore the look of the alloy but would provide a protective layer to prevent any moisture getting underneath the chrome and causing it to peel off. The only other option other than this is to buy a whole new tyre with a new alloy.
